Episode 61: The Middle Men

by whitney & christina on March 28, 2013

Find out about what Whitney drank in New Orleans and why fried green tomatoes always taste better in the South. The Crush’s old pal Carmen Grape-iago has hit the wine road once again. This time she’s in a place where comething called “renosterbos” covers the mountain slopes. Take a guess where she could be. Finally, the ladies chat with an importer cutting out the middle men, and in turn cutting your cost for a bottle of wine.

Loved this episode! I am exactly that person you mention, with no hip, well-stocked, interesting wine shops in my area (a dry county…the South might do its fried green tomatoes well, but wine, not so much.)

So, I have recently become obsessed with Chambers St. Wines. I comb their selections regularly, drooling and wishing I could buy everything. I loved hearing about what Lyle Fass is doing, and have already subscribed to his email list.

Thanks so much for always tipping me off to great resources and wines. Although, I think I might have to either marry rich or follow in Whitney’s footsteps, and work in a wine shop, because it is an expensive hobby indeed, but I am so hooked. I need to try all the wine! So much to drink, so little time.

Thanks for the kind words Aubrey! And we get you, we wish we had deeper pockets (or rich partners!) all the time!! Happy drinking!

I just discovered your podcast through The Table Set :) I am not through all the episodes yet, since I just started yesterday but thank you for the talk on the pricing of wine and also you had the interview with the maker of Fiction wines, and I had never seen them before, until today I walked into my local wine shop here in LA and they had it in stock, I’m drinking it now, so good!

Also when you mentioned the wines from areas like Croatia and the surrounding, there was a restaurant in NYC, on 9th avenue that had really rare, little known wines from that region and authentic food. I spent my 29th birthday there and then went to see a show, it was great and the wines are SO good!
