What the What? Demi-Muid: A large oak barrel that holds 159 gallons (600 liters). The Demi-Muid was used for centuries to transport wines by boat. Its name comes from the half-measure of the muid and from the Latin modius. Conceptually, the muid was originally a wagon load.
More barrel sizes:
-most Burgundy and Bordeaux “Barriques”: 228 liters and 225 liters respectively
-Muid’Oc: 320 liters
-Puncheons: 450 liters
-Tonneau: 900 liters
-Foudre and Upright Casks: anywhere from 10 – 1,200 HL (1 hectolitre = 100 litres)
